Description

The Civil War changed just about every facet of American life - including its coinage. These unusual coins were common during the war, and all but forgotten just years later. The set includes the Copper Nickel Dent (1859-1864), the cent coin known as a "Nickel" or "Nick" because of its copper and nickel composition. The 2-Cent Piece (186-1873), twice the weight of cents and nearly one inch in diameter, carried the motto "In God We Trust" for the first time, due largely to the increase religious sentiment during the Civil War. The 3-Cent Nickel (1865-1889) was widely circulated but short lived because the 5-Cent coin, introduced a year later, took its place in circulation. Because of the limited number of dates, unique denominations, and having been out of circulation for more than 100 years, these coins are very popular among serious collectors.
