The 1957 Silver Certificate was the last series of Silver Certificates issued by the United States government to be backed by actual silver. Silver Certificates also known as Blue Seals and Blue Seal Notes are still legal tender but since 1968 they have been redeemable only in Federal Reserve Notes and may no longer be exchanged for silver. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing began producing currency on high-speed rotary presses that printed notes via the dry intaglio process.
